The Witness sits at the center of Su Lin Casanova's practice, where painting becomes a way to name inner states — resilience, identity, transformation — with unusual directness. Casanova has described her work as paintings that look back, and the title makes that reciprocal gaze explicit: the picture watches as much as it is watched.

Worked in oil on a wooden panel, the surface carries the grain of its support beneath the paint, giving the image a worked, physical weight. Casanova keeps the handling deliberate and close, letting a single presence hold the frame. Nothing is decorative; the charge comes from restraint rather than incident.
