The Angel I Used To Be belongs to Su Lin Casanova's ongoing turn toward the inner life, where strength and vulnerability are named without hedging. Casanova treats painting as something hard-won and reflective — work that, in her words, looks back at the viewer — and the title's backward glance toward a former self fits squarely inside that concern with identity and transformation.

Painted in oil on a wooden panel, the piece lets the panel's firmness register through the paint, anchoring the figure in a solid ground. The handling is close and controlled, the palette held in check. Meaning arrives through what is withheld as much as what is shown.
