Niamh Barry paints the leisure underside of corporate life. After seven years on the investment team at a major North American growth-equity fund, she turns anonymous figures — at the bar, in the bath, mid-cocktail — into studies of decompression and the quiet emptiness behind a polished surface. Slim Pickings carries the wry resignation of its title into that world.

Worked in oil and acrylic on a square canvas, the painting keeps its faces withheld and its palette cool, letting composition and gesture set the tone. It reads as a small, knowing scene from the after-hours ritual of switching off — plenty on offer, and somehow slim pickings all the same.
