Aurora Kalos paints the strange, quiet interior life of her subjects, and Contemplation turns that attention toward stillness itself. The work grew from a Hokusai surimono of a grasshopper and a persimmon, and from the artist's conviction that creation is impossible without pause.

Worked in oil on canvas, the painting takes the snail as its figure — one of the slowest, least noticed creatures, moving through a path rather than toward a goal. Kalos keeps the palette hushed and the tempo slow, the square 50-centimeter format asking for the same unhurried attention the image describes.
