Automnes et fantômes 1 opens Pénélope Barbier's Autumns and Ghosts series, setting out its concern with memory, transition, and the presence of what remains. It belongs to a practice that paints the seasons as states of feeling — oils that move through the cycles of the natural world, carrying light and the quiet intelligence of landscape. Rather than describing autumn, the painting evokes it: a season standing in for change and for the traces left behind.

Oil and natural pigments on canvas give the surface layered, restrained tonal variation, the pigments lending organic depth and a tie to cycles of decay and renewal. The oil builds the composition gradually, tactile and quietly expressive. At 100 by 75 centimeters it anchors a wall without crowding it, working as a field of atmosphere more than a single focal image.
