Couchers de Soleil et Cavaliers 1 — sunsets and riders — begins one of Pénélope Barbier's seasonal series, where the natural world is painted as a state of feeling rather than a scene. It shares its logic with Automnes et fantômes and Printemps et fleurs: movement, transition, and the quiet intelligence of landscape, held through color and rhythm instead of narrative.

The work is built in oil and natural pigments on canvas at 100 by 80 cm. The pigments introduce an organic variation you can read in the surface — small shifts in tone and grain that keep the light from ever settling flat. Paint is layered gradually, so the horizon of a sunset seems to arrive through the material rather than be drawn onto it.
